Modern adaptation of a fighting classic

First released by SNK Corporation for the Neo Geo gaming platform in 1993, Samurai Shodown gets revived for mobile devices in a more modern, optimized reboot. Currently available only for Netflix Games subscribers, this action-packed classic brings back the thrill of 1v1, knock-out melee combat games.

Highly similar to popular titles like Street Fighter or Tekken, Samurai Shodown also allows players to pick their hero from a roster of more than a dozen characters. Engineered with Unreal Engine 4, this modern reboot features elevated graphics and a handful of extra features the original game does not have.

Win matches through a strategic approach

What sets Samurai Shodown apart from its immediate competitors is that it requires a more tactical approach when it comes to winning matches. Sure, landing successful combos is a good way to deal damage, but the key to victory is knowing the right timing for everything — from positioning, defending, and triggering special skills to attacking when the enemy has shown their vulnerable points.

Controls are straightforward and easy to master, with a layout reminiscent of old-school arcade machines. There’s a movement joystick on the left side of the screen, while the attack buttons are grouped on the right side. Each character has a unique back story and ability that you can freely explore and discover as you play. Interestingly, there’s also a rage gauge that increases attack intensity and triggers a disarming move.

Besides the main 1v1 fight mode, there are other game modes, as well. There are survival, time-trial, score-driven gauntlet, ranked, and dojo modes. The dojo mode is supposed to allow you to fight against the ‘ghosts’ of other players, but the so-called ‘ghosts’ often behave like they’re controlled by AI and are not accurate depictions of other players’ play styles. Finally, since the game is only available for Netflix subscribers, accessibility is rather limited.

Worth checking out

Make the most out of your Netflix subscription by checking out the free access games that come with it, including interesting titles like Samurai Shodown. This one in particular is a fighting game of the same caliber as Street Fighter and other similar games. It features a couple of game modes and a handful of unique and powerful characters. Overall, it is a must-play for those who can access it.

  • Pros

    • Varied game modes
    • Strategic 1v1 combat
  • Cons

    • Limited accessibility
    • Dojo mode falls short of expectations

Warning

This software program is potentially malicious or may contain unwanted bundled software.

Why is the software program still available?

Based on our scan system, we have determined that these flags are possibly false positives.

What is a false positive?

It means a benign program is wrongfully flagged as malicious due to an overly broad detection signature or algorithm used in an antivirus program.
